India's formal diamond trade — the manufacturers, exporters, and institutions that make up the legitimate industry — operates at enormous scale with real regulatory infrastructure behind it. Scams affecting foreign buyers are rare within that formal system, but they're not zero, and knowing the actual warning signs is more useful than assuming it simply can't happen.
Unregistered "manufacturers" with no verifiable export history
The most common issue isn't outright fraud — it's buyers dealing with informal operators who lack proper export registration (IEC), verifiable trading history, or the infrastructure to fulfill an order at the promised terms. See our full guide on verifying a manufacturer's legitimacy before committing to any purchase.
Certificates that don't match the stone
Occasionally, sellers present certification for a similar but not identical stone, or certificates from labs with much looser grading standards presented without context (see our certification comparison guide). Always cross-check certificate details — carat weight, measurements, and any inscription — physically against the stone in front of you before finalizing payment.
Pressure to pay before proper inspection
Legitimate manufacturers dealing with international buyers expect and accommodate thorough inspection before payment. Any seller pushing urgency — "this price is only available today," pressure to commit before you've had time to properly evaluate a parcel — is a real warning sign, regardless of how good the deal appears.
Deals that require payment outside normal banking channels
Legitimate export transactions move through standard, traceable banking channels. Requests for unusual payment methods, personal accounts rather than business accounts, or payment structures that don't match standard trade practice should be treated as serious red flags.
Why a hosted visit reduces this risk substantially
The single most effective protection against all of the above is working with manufacturers who've already been vetted, rather than building relationships cold on a short trip. A hosted VisitSDB visit matches you only with manufacturers with verified export history and legitimate trading infrastructure.
